Some Guidelines in Writing Articles in the 3rd Person

Writing in the third person is as if you are narrating a story as you write. And for this condition, the writing is referred as a form of narrative.

Writing then in 3rd person would require an understanding first of what is the 1st person writing or not the narrative form of writing .

Writing situations then as if you are there yourself and describe it in the “I” point of view is the kind of writing in the 1st person perspective. An example of the 1st person perspective writing is when you write “I saw her face for the first time and I thought she is really pretty.”

And there is another kind of writing described as the second person perspective with the use of “you” in the sentence. Thus this form takes shape in some articles written like this sentence “If you want to know if the lady is beautiful, you might want to look at this picture.”

Now, if we describe the 3rd person writing, the situation is that you as the writer is not exactly in the story but rather you just act as the narrator of the event. The events of the story can be given life in whatever setting or mode, depending on the narrator’s views of an event, and this is the liberating part of this form of writing. As the narrator in the 3rd person writing form, you will then have the freedom to talk about the thoughts of the other character in your story, plus your call in making the story a funny one or a serious one.

So, if you want to write following on the 3rd person way, there are some pointers that you can consider to help you.

The number one guideline is to decide whose point of view you want to tell the story about, you can choose to narrate the story from a one character’s point of view or called limited, or tell the story from all the characters’ points of view or called omniscient.

Your next tip is to make a decision about the objective of what you will narrate, and this is between narrating only about the actions of your character, or narrating all of the actions and thoughts of your character. Be guided that your objective in third writing perspective is to account only the actions of the characters and not narrating any of the thoughts or feelings of the characters.

The third tip in writing in the third person perspective is the choosing of the voice of your character or characters, and this is considered the fun aspect in this type of writing. Depending on how you imagine your story to be, you have the decision to make your character an ill-mannered person, or a witty one, or a somebody from society, and even you can form a person to make your character or make a group of characters to comprise in your story.
